FOX and CBS split the weekly leadership, last week, with FOX taking the three younger demographic categories, while CBS hauled in the most viewers and households. Both networks were also second in each category that they did not lead in.

FOX main success was the Saturday night primetime NFL playoff game, which was the #1 show of the week. over 31 million viewers tuned into see the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Carolina Panthers. The A18-49 rating pushed up to a 10.4 rating. The game represents about 20% of the FOX schedule, so it had a strong impact on the weekly averages.

FOX also saw good numbers form both the season premiere of AMERICAN IDOL and the series premiere of the new drama, EMPIRE. The two night premiere of IDOL ranked 16th and 15th, respectively, on Wednesday and Thursday nights, with each episode drawing over 11.2 million viewers each. EMPIRE may not have drawn as many viewers, but it was the #2 A18-49 rating (3.8) by a regular series, for the week. If both shows can hold their audiences, FOX could end up with a halfway decent spring.

CBS Dominated the chart, this week, pushing 21 shows into the top 30. That is EVERY CBS show, except the Saturday programs, all in the top 30. 12.2 million viewer average is well above the season average for the network (11.5 million).

NBC, in the unusual position of third place, only managed two program in the top 30. The half hour overrun of the Saturday afternoon NFL game, ranked 6th, and the three hour presentation of the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS. The highest ranking series is Wednesday night's LAW & ORDER: SVU, at #33. And, it is not like NBC was filled with repeats. Only two hours of programming, outside of Saturday night, was encore episodes.

ABC was the distant 4th place network, placing just three programs in the top 30, all comedies.
